Tristan da Cunha is a remote volcanic group of islands in the south Atlantic Ocean and the main island of that group. It is the most remote inhabited archipelago in the world, lying 2,816 kilometres (1,750 mi) from the nearest land, South Africa, and 3,360 kilometres (2,088 mi) from South America. Tristan da Cunha is said to be the "most remote inhabited location on Earth." The territory consists of the main island of Tristan da Cunha itself, which measures about 11.27 kilometres (7.0 mi) across and has an area of 98 square kilometres (37.8 sq mi), along with the uninhabited Nightingale Islands and the wildlife reserves of Inaccessible Island and Gough Island. It has a permanent population of 275 (2009 figures).

Tristan da Cunha is part of the British overseas territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha which also includes Saint Helena 2,430 kilometres (1,510 mi) to its north, and equatorial Ascension Island even farther removed, grouping the British South Atlantic islands into one far-flung centrally administered aggregate.

  • Spatenface, thank you very much for post this BBC documentary on line. I suffer from asthma, and this documentary presents the final term about asthma origin. Likewise tristan islanders, I live at clear air place, but like them I have asma attacks. This video came discard these nonsenses that asthma may has still psychological cause. When the peoples say nonsens to me about the disease I will seriously compel them to consult this video.

    Muito obrigado!

  • I liked this Island and I liked this video.. But I got disapointed when I seen that this remote place had a 'church hall' with a commitee and a load of rules about living there... It's not a free living place at all... It's just like anywhere else, with people in CHARGE and you have to comply or you face the consequences.. The most remote place on earth and you have to stand before a load of people in suits? FUCK that...

  • @spider23000 I think its premiere was in 2007 or 2008.

  • or just the place ends up internet? Polska przejmuje tą wyspę !!!!!

  • @bsm6776 They re italian descent.

  • I know it's on BBC4, but is this a relatively old documentary? I remember watching one years ago

  • @bsm6776 id imagine that there may have been some south american input in their genetics as some are rather far to dark for this to be explained by the two italians, id imagine that might be the reason..

  • Regarding the Tristanians' asthma "plight" (a bit overstated, IMHO, for the sake of compelling television), while I don't think asthma is a laughing matter, it seems a small price to pay for living peacefully in such a clean ecosystem considering the horrible diseases afflicting other isolated communities. If they had regular access to the necessary meds and could perhaps train a specialist on the island, they'd be golden. More so if they allowed just 1 or 2 outsiders to contribute their genes.

  • Thank You, Thank You, Thank you SO much for uploading! I had never seen any footage from the Tristanian exodus to Britain. It was fascinating to hear about THEIR impressions of this new land they'd encountered.

  • Many thanks for uploading this wonderful documentary!

  • did the tristians add any outside blood in their lines during the diaspora?
