What is The Small Pyramids (Luxor)
"The Small Pyramid" was founded 1998 in Trier (Germany) to help and provide medical support for poor, sick or orphaned children living in the areas around Luxor, Egypt.
A system of sponsorship has been developed for needy and ill children, with German sponsors taking up sponsorship for one or several children. Throughout the years the number of children cared for has been growing continuously.
Since April 2005, the Small Pyramid is officially registered in Egypt. It is recognized as an official non-governmental organisation (NGO) by the Egyptian authorities. The Egyptian organization is officially called "The small pyramid organization Luxor".
Since that time "The Small Pyramid" has its own office in Luxor. A doctor's surgery practice for children has been set up in addition.
At the beginning of 2007, our center for children, therapy and education -- located on the West Bank of Luxor -- was opened . There, a team of employees (a pediatrician, therapist, lawyer, social worker, etc.) now takes charge of all the problems of the needy children and their families.
The entire humanitarian, social, and medical work of "The Small Pyramid" is financed by donations. Therefore, one of the main duties of the parent German charity assocation in Trier, its executive committee, and its over 100 members is to acquire donations. Many activities, such as charity concerts, flea markets, and information events are carried out to draw attention to the work of the charity, to collect donations, and to encourage people to help.
Our aid program is being continuously developed and improved to include a wider range of aid activities, including far more activities than simply dealing with medical issues. A new rehabilitation center in Luxor is in planning.
What we are doing?
Our work focuses on every child's need or health and education. Protecting this human right is our most important concern.
Our tasks and aims:
Finding sponsorships in Germany and in Egypt for particularly needy children and their families. The donations of the godmothers and godfathers are used primarily to finance the basic needs of the sponsored families, to pay for school education and to ensure adequate medical care for the children. Here are some of our activities: * We provide full medical care by our own specialists as well as the finding of external specialists or specialized clinics. These activities not only benefit the sponsored children, but also all members of their family. * We equip handicapped children with orthopedic equipment and technical aids such as artificial limbs, wheelchairs, hearing aids, splints, etc. * Our specialists provide individual therapy options for handicapped children in our medical care organizations in the city of Luxor and on the West Bank of Luxor. * We offer additional financial aid in case of emergency, also for needy children and their families who are not in our sponsorship program. * We provide clothes, hygienic articles, school notebooks, toys, etc. for our children. * We carry out social work and provide legal care of the children and their families * We set up educational and aid programs, especially for children and mothers, such as: o literacy courses for the mothers in the program o courses in English and computers o courses in sewing and knitting, private lessons, nursery school, etc. * We help to improve the domestic situation through the construction of water pipes and sanitation, the building of further living space, providing of beds, mattresses, blankets, etc. * We disseminate information on first aid, diseases and preventative measures, issues of hygiene, etc. * We cooperate with local relief organizations and with the national health insurance system * We are continuously developing different types of aid, usually in our Center on the West Bank * We are setting up distribution outlets for the sewing and knitting work of our mothers and children at the Center * And last not least: We contribute to the advancement of cultural exchange possibilities and international understanding between countries.
Our project is supported by the UNESCO.
What we are also doing
If we get sufficient special donations, we try to improve the often dramatic situation of our families. We have water pipelines built into the houses, provide toilets and showers, install hot water devices, rebuild rundown building or build new additional dwellings. One of our other tasks is called "warmth donates", here we provide the families with sufficient warm covers and mattresses for the cold winter nights.
