  • @scarmenl Yes you have to feed the fish, the fish waste feeds the plants, the fish are feed by various plants such as duckweed, worms, and magets ect.. that you can grow from the discarded fish parts ect... if you'd like to find out more please visit my site at jedgarbillings dot com, Please leave a comment while there, thanks :)

  • @tony86482 it's not quite that simple, you have to have a microbial/ bacterial growth chamber which first turns the fish pooh (ammonium based urine) nitrate into nitrites, I'm not familiar with Will Allen, Aquaponics is the brain child of Dr James Rakocy, and his research team at the University of the Virgin Islands ( UVI) and it took them over 30 years of research to perfect the system. If you'd like to find out more stop by my site at jedgarbillings dot com leave a comment :)

  • @friscoamm mesh or screening is used, to prevent the fish from being sucked up into the pump, check out my site for more information jedgarbillings.dot com

  • Cool set up!

  • @scarmenl both feed each other.. you just have to keep the ph level survivable

  • I am curious about the pumps. At some point, I am guessing, the fish are 'fingerlings' or at least very small. What keeps them from being sucked up into the pump? Is there a screen placed on the end of the pump hose? Thanks .... all of this is brilliant. We recently purchased 5 acres in NE TX and can't wait to try this out.

  • good my friend ;-)

  • Do you have to feed the fish anything special or is there enough waste from the plant growth to feed the fish?

  • @marlin187 I know I'm 4 months late, but yes. The idea is to eliminate the need for extra filtration. It isn't drinking water, so it doesn't need to be "purified", 85 feet of plants will clean out most of the toxins and "fish poop" while serving as food for them. By the end of the process, the water is now clean enough to go back into the tank, but oxygen has also been restored in the water. Will Allen got the MacArthur Foundation "Genius Grant" for his brilliant idea.

  • No secondary filter systems for this setup.Straight up pump and go??
