Albert Bierstadt - American Paintings

Albert Bierstadt (7 gennaio 1830 - 18 febbraio 1902)
- Pittore statunitense, tedesco di nascita, cantore del selvaggio West.
Ha studiato pittura con i membri della Scuola di Dusseldorf, in Germania dal 1853 al 1857.
Bierstadt ha fatto parte della Hudson River School che non è una istituzione, ma piuttosto un gruppo informale di pittori.
Agli inizi del diciannovesimo secolo, gli americani erano attratti con passione dalle tranquille foreste e ai verdi spazi aperti della loro terra. Questo accadeva mentre l'America andava rapidamente industrializzandosi. La minaccia delle strade ferrate e della meccanizzazione era un dato di fatto, e in risposta gli americani desideravano proteggere le loro bellezze naturali.

Bierstadt era maestro nel creare romantiche vedute della selvaggia natura americana. Le sue opere venivano sempre realizzate su enormi tele che eseguiva con grande precisione nel dettaglio, mostrando la natura nei luoghi più remoti e inaccessibili, dal lontano splendore delle Montagne Rocciose alla grandiosità della Yosemite Valley.

Di origine tedesca, Bierstadt si trasferì negli Stati Uniti quando era ancora bambino. La sua opera rappresenta l'ultimo sussulto romantico primma dell'arrivo della ferrovia.

La necessità di credere in un Nuovo Mondo, per lo meno idealmente, restò molto forte per lungo tempo.




Albert Bierstadt (1830-1902) is best known for his spectacular landscapes of the unsettled west. He was born in Germany, and was two years old when his family emigrated to America and settled in New Bedford, Massachusetts. Beginning in 1859, he made three trips west, each time making oil sketches on paper. When he returned to his studio, he used these sketches and oil studies to paint huge, detailed panoramic views (some 6 feet by 10 feet) of Western scenery. His paintings emphasized the spectacular landscapes, sometimes exaggerating what he had seen and changing a few details to make the scene more interesting.
