This is my first attempt at rotation in a backflip, I landed the first one, on the second one I crashed...any tips would be appreciated. The rotation felt really unnatural and I didn't think I was doing it right--so I asked the guy at the gym and he said that the rotation should start after you're in the air. This didn't make sense to me though because during free-fall it's impossible to start a rotation without any initial rotation, we learned about this in physics (conservation of angular momentum) lol. So are you supposed to slightly rotate as you jump and then tuck in after you leave the ground, or what?

  • oh ok, that helps, thanks, I'll try it tomorrow at open gym. I'm still a bit confused about how you can create the rotation though once you've left the ground

  • you can do it!!!!!!!just need more practice...

now i will start learning this move

  • just jump straight up then go into the initial flip , i have a good vid in my favorites that teaches u the how to do this it isnt as complicated as u think ,,,,, really all u have to do is first think about the jump straight up then think about the flip.

  • also where is this?

  • imagine that you were falling off a small building onto your back, most would be able to flip over to land on hands and feet, ever seen a cat? just throw your shoulder one way, try not to use your arms to get the spin

  • ive seen similar gymnastics not quite so good, but if you watch after he lands the way he raises his arms just isnt right, to mutch of an even pace, no fluxuation

  • Try it on a trampoline. Get good height, keep your body straight and rotate late, with your arms tucked. once you understand the physics, you'll know how to get it off block and walls etc.

  • your gym guy advice is right, but he should have shown you what he meant. for a back 180 or back full, you get upside down first and then throw your head in the direction you want to rotate, whilst whipping in your arms tight and allowing your shoulders and upper torso to follow the direction your head is looking. This is the technique used by trampolinists and gymnasts. The technique you're trying is when there isn't much height involved, so getting round quickly is important.
