I don't go much for lists, but if I had to make one of my favorite jazz recordings, "Ezz-thetics" by the George Russell Sextet would be on that list. From 1961, it features Russell along with Eric Dolphy, Dave Baker, Don Ellis, Steve Swallow and Joe Hunt. A reissue of the album on cd, with bonus tracks, came out a few years ago. How an album that is almost 50 years old can sound so modern today is a tribute to Russell's genius. George died a year and a half ago, but his music remains, and always will. "Nardis" is his arrangement of the Miles Davis composition.
