On July 16, 2009, the House Education and Labor Committee was considering amendments to a massive health care overhaul. At 9:54 pm, Rep. Petri called attention to the need to protect consumer-driven plans such as Health Savings Accounts coupled with low-premium high deductible plans which have proved highly popular with consumers, and have been a great success for the employees of Manitowoc County, among other employers. The health care overhaul had ambiguities which threatened the future viability of HSAs. After a long night's work of considering amendments, at about 5 a.m., the Committee agreed to Rep. Petri's amendment protecting consumer-directed plans.
