Michel Pignolet de Montéclair (1667-1737)
Le Triomphe de la Constance
Cantata for solo voice (soprano), solo bass viol and basso continuo
Second video contains :
Récitatif : C'est ainsi que des feux
Air : Ne cédons point à l'Inconstance
Cantata has a pastoral subject and praises constancy in love.
The composition is based on alternation of recitatives and airs limited in this case to 3 pairs that was just common structure for solo cantatas of the period.
The first recitative "Ce fit sous ces ormeaux" involves solo viol part besides hapsichord and viol of basso continuo (so named accompanied recitative).
The second air ("Trop charmante flamme") has indication 'Touche seule': thus basso continuo part should be played only by viol with no keyboard instrument. The reason for this restriction is the character of music imitating the sound of musette (French sort of bagpipes).
The last recitative "C'est ainsi que des feux" consists of two parts, the second one having a character of short arioso ("Pardonne à mon amour")
Performed by:
Olga Nazaykinskaya, soprano
Alexandra Drozdova, bass viol
Vladimir Drozdov, bass viol
Anastassia Kornilova, hapsichord
Recorded at the concert in Prechistenka Concert Hall on July 4, 2001
Digital mastering from audio cassette recording
Air
Ne cédons point à l'Inconstance,
Fuyons ses pieges dangereux
Et que notre perseverance
Nous rende dignes d'etre heureux.
En vain dans des chaînes nouvelles
Nous cherchons de nouveaux plaisirs,
Ce n'est que les ardeurs fidelles
Qui puevent combler nos desirs.
English text (translated by me):
Recitative
Thus Damon demonstrated constancy of fire that touched his heart
When the object of its wishes appeared suddenly before his surprised eyes,
Flattering his hope with sweet look.
You come, he sais to her, to enjoy my troubles? Ah! isn't it enough to have caused my grief?
Do you need more... You had no rivals, sensitive Climene answers approaching him,
I wanted to make sure of your sincere ardour
Forgive my love this cruel trickery
I pay it much by mortal pain that it cost to your heart.
Air
Let us not give in to Inconstancy,
Let us escape its dangerous traps
May our persistence
Make us worthy of being happy.
In vain in new chains
We search new pleasures,
It is but true ardour
That might please our desires.
