Heinrich Scheidemann, born in 1595 (90 years before J.S.Bach) was a giant of North German organ music. He studied for three years in Amsterdam with Sweelinck, returning to north Germany to become organist at the Catherinen Kirche in Hamburg, where he served for almost 40 years. During his tenure, the four manual organ of the Catherinen Kirche was rebuilt and enlarged by the famous builder Scherer. This large organ was undoubtedly one of the finest instruments in Hamburg, a city of fine organs. The organ music of Scheidemann represents an innovative transition from the Sweelinck school to the rich contrapuntal music of Buxtehude and Bach, fully utilizing the expanded resources of the pedal division typical of north German organs of the period. Scheidemann died in 1663, a victim of the plague.

Tracker organ (Opus 27) by A. David Moore of Vermont.

  • Thank you very much. This is splendid. What a versatile little organ. I really covet it.

  • @Untersatz Thank you so much for stopping by to listen and thank you for the kind comment. The organ is indeed a joy to play. From a philosophical standpoint, actually, one does not own such an instrument, one only is its curator for a while. One hopes it will go on to have many curators who will enjoy it as much as this one does. George

  • What lovely music performed so nicely on such a lovely instrument! It all resonates deeply for me evoking time spent with a dear friend over lunches discussing this and that.

  • @Green4321 We use them, take care of them and pass them forward in time.

  • That! Was a joy to listen to! Thank you. I agree with your "curator" comment. Perhaps it's a part of getting older that I realize we may be the curator of many things, but the owner of few.
