All media face the risk to become irrelevant.

Parenting duties includes maintaining relevance of learning media ; and introducing new, invasive, richer technologies only with great care.

The reaction of kids to technology is a metaphor of what happens to society : to be simplistic, an OS upgrade.

What occurs today can be compared to the diffusion of the printing press.

In 1450, as the printing press blazed throughout Europe, one fear seized the few who knew how to read : losing their memory. Hefty and expensive books could not be moved around. Reading without memorizing was unconceivable. But with cheap books everywhere, remembering millions of lines had ceased to be relevant.

This fear was based on the old context. Memory suddenly ceased to be a competitive edge, to be replaced by more analytical skills and affordable books.

Print changed us in more areas. It helped to build nations and made peoples' minds more sequential, analytical, visual. It allowed to develop schools and to mass-product culture and literacy.

But the fear of losing memory and the hope of getting rid of glasses prevented many XVth century observers to understand what was actually going on. Sometimes, the same happens today.

IT is changing us, but we dislike this idea. We nurture the dream of controlling technology. We buy zillions of touch screens and we hope to remain untouched. We have abandoned generations of kids in front of TV but, somehow, we are scared when we see one baby with an iPad.

And right we are : technology « codes » our minds and societies too quickly to allow us to keep control. When we see a baby dropping magazines because they have no hyperlinks, videos, social features, and their pictures don't zoom in -- we feel, better than with market studies, that we are slightly changing our society.

  • Just wait until the child is old enough to run while holding objects. What "Does Not Work" for you will have to be re-evaluated.
