To you and me, perhaps. But a small child or baby could fall down. And on some stations the announcements were designed for older stock anyway.

In Berin kommt bei einigen Stationsansagen auch sowas wie:
"Achtung Fahrgäste, bitte beachten Sie beim Ausstieg den Abstand zwischen Türkante und Bahnsteig!"

(In Munich they gonna say: "Bitte zurückbleiben!" means someth' like "please - stay away from the doors!" In Berlin they say: "Zurückbleiben, bitte!")

Yes we can see that there's a gap, not everybody is blind. Even at that blind people have the white sticks so they don't fall on to the tracks.
