Performed by James Howard Young on Melodica.

This is a set of three 5-part pieces from Anthony Holborne (1545 - 1602) that he wrote "for viols, violins, or other musical wind instruments". So surely he must have also meant melodica? Nah. Anyway, here is a brief video where I've chosen to use Logic Pro's multimeter as a backdrop.

Here's the setlist with dance classifications and start time:
Almain "The Choise" 0'0"
Galliard "Heigh Ho Holiday" 1'11"
Galliard "Ecce Quam Bonum" 2'23"

There's a good article about this mysterious composer here:
http://www.hoasm.org/IVM/Holborne.html

Though we'll have to ignore the fact that they rank Holborne among the greatest composers of the time, along with Dowland, but they make no mention of Byrd!

  • Absolutely fantastic sound and wonderful play. Rhythmically and tasteful. Congratulations! Would you like to record something with me? :) Seriously...

  • @yanych Thank you! What kind of collaboration did you have in mind?

  • @JamesHowardYoung After I heard Holborne in your performance, I said to myself: "It would be cool to record a few lute songs with this guy!" :) If you are interested, we could record one or two songs together: SATB parts on melodica + vibraphone as lute (eg, h t t p : / / www2.cpdl.org/wiki/images/download.php/?file=6/68/Dow2-sue.pdf ) What do you think?

  • @yanych That looks good. I'm not sure when I can do it, but I can maybe send you an audio file that you could cue up to at some point?

  • @JamesHowardYoung or you could send me one?

  • @JamesHowardYoung Most likely I'll do as you suggest. I'll send a link to the sheet music and the vibraphone sound clip as soon as I'll ready. Thanks! (PS - There are no deadlines, you can record all the parts, at your convenience)

  • @yanych Ok you can just send your file when possible. I'd also like the video if you can get it, in case we decide to make a multi-video performance.

  • such a quirky and gorgeous sound.

  • Yes! The Suzuki B34 bass. I just wish there was a contrabass too, but maybe that's greedy.

  • Is there a BASSO melodica too?
