@davidsanful About the ninth hour Jesus cried out in a loud voice, "[Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani]?" ... (Matthew 27:46) I guess this is the true origin of the name used in HG. Wells novel... El' or Elohim/ Eloi(?) is a word for "god"... or "gods"... but the uttering of Jesus may have been misunderstood or misheard... it's not sure if it's Hebrew/ Aramaic (syriac) or even Mayan, which he might have learned in his "lost years"...
