Now for someone who wasn't an Aussie/Kiwi teenager in 1986 you will never have heard of this song by Aussie band Noiseworks. It's probably their most recognisable song, quite melodic with strong vocals from Jon Stevens. The song is incredibly heartfelt, basically a guy who doesn't recognise that his girl is seriously depressed and when she commits suicide he can't believe it, he didn't realise the seriousness of the signs, and wishes he could go back because he is lonely without her. Heart wrenching stuff, everyone take note, depression is more than ever the sickness of the times.

Anyway, I made it really busy in the left hand for myself, right hand isn't _tooo_ bad...but be warned, this is tricky stuff, I've been playing it for over six months and that rendition had several errors/things that I didn't express as I wished.

But I hope you (my fellow Aussie mates and Kiwi bros) enjoyed it! :)

Note that I recorded the audio in this one with a Zoom H1 (and a little post EQ tweaking) - I reckon I prefer that sound over the pickups!

Enjoy!

  • Nice job! Don't know if it's just me and that I'm not familiar with the song or the band, but, being Canadian, it reminds me an awful lot of Gordon Lightfoot's "If You Could Read My Mind" in parts.

  • @Flesher1697 I know the song, can't think of where it's similar...but the number of times I hear one song in another I'm not surprised!

    Thanks for stopping by :)

  • Hey Jaw, nice song. You can tell it is 80's stuff, with a big chorus like they used to do... and I think technically it is your best shot so far.

  • @greenlentils Thanks Rom! Yeah they made big choruses and wore big hair in the 80's. I think I may have put too much into that arrangement, it's too hard to play! But, if you aren't pushing yourself, you won't be forcing yourself to get better. Not my favourite arrangement thus far, but I'm happy with it. Next! :)

  • Hi JAW,

very nice song! Though I didn't know the song it seemed familiar to me.

Great playing and a nice warm sound - to my ears a lot better than the crisp pick-up sound!

    Cheers, Hansel

  • @HanzP Thanks Hanz, I had "dodgy" strings on, I'll tell a story about it on my blog in the next week or so, it's an interesting story. Suffice to say the strings weren't as good as they should be, but I EQ'd out most of the "tonal imbalance". You're right about the microphone sound and I think the warmth comes in two parts - the full harmonic response of everything - from the strings to the room - but also because it is a stereo pickup. That makes more of a difference than you'd think!
