Seating cast rifle bullets. Cast bullets are more prone to damage when seating than jacketed bullets. Also velocities are lower than jacketed bullets. This particular load I'm using uses a medium burning pistol powder. In this case I'm usning Alliant "Unique", in my opinion it's the mose verstile pistol pwder out there. It can also be used in rifle ammunition when using cast bullets.
The Poly Fill is used to take up the excess case capacity. This makes for a more reliable and consistant ignition. You MUST weigh the poly fill because it adds weight to the overall projectile weight.
The cartridge I'm using is a 30-06, probably the single most versitile rifle cartridge in North America. It has a long neck that holds a cast bullet firmly and unlike the .308 Winchester, doesn't seat the bullet into the case body, thus taking up powder capacity. Remember this is the basics and we'll get into some very detailed tutorials as we progress.

  • How do you know how much polyfill to put in? I assume it does not do much in increasing case pressure, so do you just fill one up, then take it out and weight it and use that weight for the rest? Thanks.

  • @ELITEHAMSTER123 I fill the case with the charge...fill the rest of the space with Poly Fil then weigh both powder and filler on a scale then calculate the amount needed. I add the poly fil weight to the projectile weight when calculating a lod as well.

  • Does the poly-fil ever clog or obstruct the rifle?

  • @bullandbullets Never once have I had a clog of poly fil.

  • Do you ever cast copper or brass bullets?

  • @MrOttmandus No...they are made with pressure to turned on a lathe.
