Abhorrence was a Finnish Death metal band, formed in 1989 in Helsinki. The band is acclaimed to be one of the very first Death metal bands, certainly the first ones to rise outside the Turku city early scene ( Xysma, Funebre, Disgrace ). The band included members from a Thrash metal band "Violent Solution" , located in Klaukkala (a small town west from Helsinki ). The band was a short-lived ,only recording a rehearsal demo "Macabre Masquerade" and "Vulgar Necrolatry" ( popularized by the title track later covered by Amorphis ). The band also recorded a four-tracked EP, which was sadly ripped-off by the notorious Seraphic Decay. However, the band, although short-lived, was certainly one of the most shocking and influencial Finnish bands of it's genre, both for the Finnish scene and the whole world's underground Death metal.
Abhorrence is also to be thanked for the PR work they did for Amorphis ( The band, that contains the same members, excluding the vocalist Jukka Kolehmainen ), for the Relapse guys were crazy about Abhorrence.

The vocalist Jukka Kolehmainen has also provided lyrical aid for a significant American UG death metal group "Funebrarum" also influenced by Abhorrence and other Finnish bands.

This is from their demo "Vulgar Necrolatry" of 1990.

Lyrics:

Erosion of life i see
It makes the passion burn in me
Life it always withers away
Death will eternally stay

Corpses in their coffins
Forever rest in peace ?
There sleeping with the aspergillus
Is this justice to the dead ?

The atracious site, of a burial ceremony
christians weeping, for the departed
They don't understand, they should envy them !

The deceased they know, is there a Paradise ?
Or shall we feel, the Purgatory!
I open the graves, admire the Rot
I can feel the presence of something from beyond

Aureaola of nauseating reek
Wings of shriveled skin
Holy beauty of carcass
Divine sight for me to gaze upon !

Necrolatric, reverence for putrefaction
Necrolatric, reverence for the stench

I kneel, before a carrion
I pray, before the dead
I know, they shall rise
I fear, for the scourge
I revere, power of the dead

  • first time i heard about abhorrence was a sampler called "seraphic decay records" and i still love this band, but before 5 years i dont know that abhorrence was the band before amorphis. thax for uploading and sorry for my bad english

  • @REPULSION77

Abhorrence / Violent Solution indeed were the predecessors of Amorphis in a way.

  • Finnish Death has that crypt-like atmosphere, never duplicated, i love it, more than American or Swedish, and just a question? How did you get your hands on all these cult Finnish albums and demos?? I've managed to get Demigod's 'Unholy Domain' 1991 demo tape, but you must have a room full of cult Finnish metal! \m/

  • @GTASbo0mst1ck

I got quite a collection of re-releases and first press CDs and vinyls of these classics. Not so much of demo tapes ,though. Only a handful.

  • @XysmicExecration

Well, yeah. But I think there's dozens of old-school maniacs with multiple times more tapes than I do. Congrats on that "Unholy Domain". One of the epitomes of Finnish Death metal

  • Wait until you hear the Disment of Soul demo, the sounds are also very brutal and raw. Especially the distortion in the bass is awesome...

Oops, strong words on Incantation, the band holds pretty much a cult status... ;-)

  • I got the have that demo somewhere. And about Incantation. I didn't really mean it like that.

  • One of the best death metal songs, if not my personal favourite. The rotten and crumbling sound in addition to the deep and gutteral vocals just create an overwhelming atmosphere in a disgusting way. I believe that finnish death metal has really captured the essence of 'death metal' which is defiance of all standards and complacent ideas and conjuration of cruel , abhorrent or otherwordly images each time with a different aim.

  • this is RARE old school shit right here

  • @XysmicExecration a handful is still a quite impressive part of a collection
