Boys aged between 8 and 16 years old from the tribal village of Hwâârhê, near Hienghène, on the north east coast of Grande Terre, Kanaky (New Caledonia) perform a type of dance called "Hneen" at the Festival of Pacific Arts in Rarotonga, Cook Islands. The dance takes its origin in a legend and was learned by an old man from the tribe "Pwé-Radam", who formerly dwelled on the left bank of the "Thângen" river. When the French colonisers came, the Pwé-Radam were chased from their land and settled on the other side of the river. A landslide destroyed part of their new village and the survivors had to settle at the village of Thângen. In 1932 the people of the village of Hwâârhê made a customary gesture to the owner of the dance in order to be allowed to dance it during the inauguration of a church. Since that day it is part of the cultural heritage of the Hwâârhê people. It is typical of the dances performed in the north of Grande Terre, symbolising scenes from everyday life of the tribe. The accompaniment consists of a slit drum, a percussion block and nine stamping tubes, playing a series of pulsations commonly named "pilou-rhythm" or "Bwanjep-hneen".

  • For your info, As of today New-Caledonia is still officially called New-Caledonia.

Even though a minority wants the name to be changed to Kanaky, it hasn't been done yet. i would be grateful if you could change that tittle you've got there.

    thanks
