Bjorling loved to sing this one as an encore in Recitals and did a great job also with it. Crooks had a fine career and was underrated because he was American in a time when it was more the " in thing" to be European but we had so many great singers also.
Richard Crooks, clearly one of the most beautiful sounding tenors of his time in an era of great tenors.
I think he was just a little bit underrated in his own time and certainly, today.
A regular at the "met" but i don't think he had along operatic career. I think it was cut short by illness. Although he continued to sing very well up to the time of his death I stand to be corrected on this point.
Surprised that no one has responded to this so far. This is not an easy song to sing unless you just belt it out. Crooks performs it with a sensitive variety of tone and volume. His sustained piano singing demonstrates marvellous control - a sensitive rending indeed. Few could equal this.
Frank LaForge on the Piano was my Great Grandfather...this was nice to find!!
