shamisen is just a type of sanxia. Japan has no original music
-
@itsumonihon They have a different sound, but they are related instruments. Japan did borrow some elements from Chinese culture, whether you like to admit it or not is another thing, but it's true!

@improv113 They are, but Japan did borrow a lot on Chinese culture. As well as many other countries in east asia.
-
@AShamisenplayer It's not a shamisen though... and they're from 2 completely different cultures.

Awesome , thank you!

@mistermen440 totally different sound, the snake skin sound box makes a big difference to the tone. this recording is very low quality, if you hear one up close or on a good recording you'll see the only similarity is that both instruments have strings

This instrument is usually used in the performance in "nanyin' shows; it compliments the 'pipa', and is normally an octave lower than the sound of 'pipa'

I want one so bad. That and a Sitar.
-
it's a cool instrument and all, but here in 'merica it's known as a "cigar box guitar"

I LOVE this song! I first heard it on a recording. You know, the Sanxian's technique is so similar to the pipa, no wonder the first time I heard this song in the recording, I really and honestly thought it was a pipa. Until I learned to read some Chinese characters, I saw 三弦 and was like WOW O_O
Though, this version sounds a bit melancholy because the recording has instrumental accompaniment. It still sounds so lovely nevertheless.
This is Sanxian, its a Chinese instrument which the shamisen is most likely descended from.
