We take it on trust that the drugs our doctors prescribe are safe and effective.

But this special investigation exposes huge failings in the system of medicines regulation that is supposed to monitor drug safety. It reveals how patients' lives have been put at risk as a result.

  • How can they live with themselves? I hope when they sleep they have the sort of nightmares I had when I took this drug and when they wake may they remember that their 'safe' drug prevents thousands from ever waking from the nightmare. May God forgive them because I never will. If I sound bitter it's because I am.

  • I'm not a huge fan of Shelley Jofre's presenting style, but as an interviewer she's brilliant. In all the Seroxat programmes, her contempt for Benbow in particular is luminous - that sort of thing is considered unprofessional now, but I think we could do with more of this old-fashioned campaigning journalism, if viewers are going to more than just shrug after they watch the show. All the great documentaries that ever achieved results would be considered "too campaigning" by modern standards.

  • what about efexor?

    ever tried that?

  • Thanks for uploading this - I've just been prescribed peroxetine (not called Seroxat where I live but still the same drug) and has just started taking it, and I will now be aware of these side effects. I am suffering from major depression, so I hope to be in the lucky bunch that benefits from the drug, I am in great need of an improvement, but I will talk to my psichiatrist about being careful about these withdrawal - suicidal thoughts warnings. Thank you very much.

  • me too.
