The scene here is the Muddy York Hotel during the Toronto Downtown Jazz Festival on a humid muggy, evening in June 1995. Jodie Drake is guesting with the Hot Five Jazzmakers as they play a standard blues. Jodie died January 25 2000, having made a name for herself as a jazz singer with a good feel for the blues, even at the age of 76, as she was when this video was filmed in 1995! Jodie earned the rare honour, for a Canadian, of being included in the New Orleans Jazz Hall of Fame. Band solos set the mood, particularly that of trumpet man Charlie Gall, who is in great form. Rest of the band consists of Janet Shaw -- clarinet; Rainer Hunck -- tenor banjo; Colin Bray -- string bass; Graham Scriven -- drums and Brian Towers leads on trombone

  • Hi she's also my Grand Mother Tell Aunt Judy Hello Love and God Bless Lee Simmons II

  • Jodi and my mother Marianne were good friends when I was a child. I was very fortunate to see Jodi perform at sunday matinees at Friar Tucks and Bourbon St. My mother will be thrilled when I show her this footage. Thanks so much for posting it. She was and still is my inspiration for being a singer. Not only as a youngin but forever.

  • I had the rare honour of playing drums for her in 1993 during the Women in Blues Revue at the music hall...I still treasure that memory....thank you for posting this

  • Just excellent. Good solos all around, love that bowed bass, and fine, spirited vocal from Jodie Drake. Thanks for posting.
