July 2010, Michaela Nee shakes a diet Coke up then does the tapping method to prevent the can from exploding when you open it. We could have done a control and put it to the side for the same time that we spent tapping it. Do you think it helped?

this could be a fun science project actually - testing different procedures, timing it, with controls (same batch, same temperature, same shakes). How do you rate explosiveness; testing different methods, plotting out data - could be a fun and interesting science project!!!

  • @dedicateddad Correct. THUMP on the SIDE of the can, as explained.

  • You need to hold it upright and "thump" it - like "plucking" with your finger - on the SIDE of the can - all the way around.

When shaken, Excess C02 pushes the soda out of the can, making it "spew."

The thumping settles the solution, and sends excess CO2 to the top of the can so it doesn't "explode"

Try it this way and you'll see!

  • read the transcrbed, sounds like a murder case
