As a 3rd year student for music producer at Conservatory in Ghent, I had to choose a song, and reproduce it intirely. It had to approach the original song as close as possible. Here is the mastered end result (in compressed YouTube quality which is rubbish, but you got the idea). Everything you hear is recorded, edited and mixed by me in ProTools.

Originally I synced my version with the original videoclip, but Sony Music Entertainment was not very happy with that, so I made one of those boring slideshows:)

First I listened very carefully to the song, and transcribed each instrument into notes on a masterscore. Then I made an electronic midi-version from it as a guide track for the musicians. Then I searched for good musicians (very difficult to find someone with a voice like Jay Kay, but he's quite close I think!), handed them over their scores and recorded each part seperately in the big recording studio at school, which took me about 3 months.

The editing, mixing and mastering took me another couple of months. Every little detail had to be in it, and had to sound like in the original song. Sometimes it took me days to equalize one little effect sound like it sounds in the original. There's still a little difference in the sound because the original was recorded on tape, and I did everything digitally (even though I tried to vitalize it with a lot of outboard effects to let it sound like a tape recording), but I think I'm quite close.

And here it is!
Enjoy, and leave a comment, telling me what you think about it.

Cheers

a special thanks to all the musicians who helped me creating this!
Voice: Sonny Vande Putte
Drums: Bert Van Damme
Bass: Stijn Tondeleir
Backings: Katleen Van den Bossche
(piano, strings (30 channels of real strings) and additional effects by myself)

  • Hello, very nice work, I very like it, you're a master, but of course as a musician and sound engineer I have to mention a few details. Of course the violin sound in some places as the original, the piano's not what it should be, I do not know if it's synthesizer but this song is a real piano. But it's too funny and too much work, I like it a great guy. I love this version.

  • @josstudio Hey man, thanks for your oppinion! Of course there are some differences, you're absolutely right. This was inevitable. The piano is synthesized indeed. I did this on purpose because on the original it sounds so tight like it's quantized in midi, although it is not.

    Many thanks

  • you made an awesome job, man! thumps up!

  • @IkariCologne thanks dude!

  • nice work dude

  • Awesome!

  • I didn't know Stevie Wonder covered this track?!

(that's a compliment by the way, good job)

  • @MsBeatlejoos Absolutely! It blew me away when I heard it. They have obviously work massively hard on getting every little detail exactly the way they wanted it. I have massive respect for them for attempting to remark a song as difficult as virtual insanity and I think they did a superb job. I'm glad you like the videos which I have showed you, thank you for subscribing. :) I hope I can continue to show you videos which you enjoy.

  • @jamiroquai01fan Thanks for the tip-off ! I'm your subscriber and I like reading your remarks about Jamiroquai. You've showed me some pretty good stuff this past year, and this is one of them. This remake is fab, Love it, but so much work involved.

  • Wow! This is quite simply the best jamiroquai remake/cover I have ever heard! It's SO CLOSE to the original. You deserve a medal or something for this. Incredible! Well done. :D
