If you understand James as a character his demeanor in this scene makes more sense.

Later in the game you'll hear more conversations between Mary and James. As her illness progressed she became more and more verbally abusive towards James. I'm guessing because Maria sounds exactly like Mary, her yelling causes James to just shut down and take it. Plus with all the other crap he's dealing with I think I'd sound distant too...

I really think this is the most beautiful part of game, at :51, when James starts TO HUG Maria. It's like the whole game's message comes down to that moment: give up and live in the delusion or keep going and face the truth.
I want to make-out with everyone member of Team Silent.
