  • What are you doing in my house?

  • Susan,

I fell in love with Zebra Finches and i decided to buy a pair. I've done a lot of research and know how to keep them well, but i have a few questions.

If i'm ever to let them out of their cage, is there something i should do to keep them safe besides covering up the windows and mirrors? I simply don't have space for a bird room. Also, assuming they're not tamed, are they going to return to their cage eventually or will they keep trying to escape from the house?

  • Finches are really good at flying. I never cover up my mirrors or windows and they have never run into either. My cockatiels on the other hand seem to always fly straight into a wall. Getting finches back in the cage may seem like it would be hard but it really isn't. First of all, they will go back there on their own at night. And if you want to get them in sooner, I've found that putting some fresh lettuce on the bottom of their cage lures them back pretty well. Good luck!

  • my zebra finches flew away and then the next day when i woke up i looked outside the window and i saw a finches head and it looked excatly like mine :(

  • I am so sorry to hear that.

  • finches aere my fave, and I was always sad because I thought they were untame birds ^.^ now I know otherwise, I may see where I can locate a couple of hand-raised finches, or learn myself up so I can hand-raise a couple.

  • They are really easy to hand-raise once you get the hang of it.

No they do not bite hard and when they bite it tickles but at night mine is aggressive and leaves beak marks on your finger

  • @ ctsconnor

There needs to be one finch of each sex and the female can lay eggs by herself but they won't be fertile so you do need a boy and girl to have baby's. Think of it like poultry chooks no boy = fried eggs. Yes boy = baby's

  • Listen people if you want your finch to be tame like hers and mine you need to dedicate yourself for about a month to ten weeks I start when their 2 weeks old and if you want them to talk say the same phrase/word/whistle in the same tone heaps. You can train them but mine only comes to his name and plays dead.

  • So If I raise my pairs babies myself they will become tame?

  • How utterly cute!! I bred scads of finches years and years ago and was never able to get them tame enough to fly on to my finger. Now, I've bred scads of cockatiels and they are trained to step up on my finger. Good job with your finches!

  • @blackeyedsiouxsie cause cockatiels are stupid and think theyre gonna get out

  • @monjanse they have whats called a "soft beak"... so no
