What is legalism? We hear the term often in the church, but many have a sub-biblical view of what exactly it is. What about the actual weaker brother vs. the potential weaker brother? Is legalism limited to the conversation about salvation? You can't really have a discussion on legalism without addressing the topic of worldliness as well. In this episode of Rightly Divided guest Phil Johnson sits down with me to discuss both.

  • Got to get me a Spurgeon bobblehead! How cool is that. Great Job Lane. Thank you Phil. Phil is a guy I'd like to meet. My pastor is Tom Pennington, who I believe was Phil's predecessor. Tom is a superb fellow, I'm sure Phil is as well. Keep pumping out the great vids Lane. You are doing great things. I have got lots of priceless info from these interviews and clips that you so tirelessly put together for easy viewing. Lane, you are much appreciated.

  • @spellbiff Thanks very much for your encouragement! God definitely uses it to help keep me motivated.

  • The subtleties of legalism constantly want to take me back to where I was just a short time ago; which was an unhappy, joyless follower of Christ.....this video is my pill against that sad state of being. Praise God for the simplicity and truth of the Gospel.

  • @theflarpus Thanks for sharing that. I, too, fight against that daily. Indeed, praise

God that He gives us grace in our struggles, friend.

  • @700bees We didn't say adhering to the laws of God is legalism. We said that adhering to the laws of God *in order to gain salvation* is legalism. Obviously the more you're sanctified from sin (the breaking of God's law) the more you keep God's law, but we should never believe that because we "keep God's law better" that somehow earns our justification. The reason we "keep God's law better" or, in other words, "are sanctified" is because we've been justified freely by faith alone.

  • Legalistic Christians suck . When I was a teenager this one "pastor" tried to make me believe I would go to hell for playing jazz. What an idiot. I'm so glad I left that place. I've been all over the world with my music while that sad sack is still in Detroit. I'm telling you, don't let any legalistic/ascetic christian mess up your life with their talk. They will take all of the fun out of your life because they want you to be lame, stiff and corny like them. Vigorously defend your liberty!

  • leaglism doesn't exist in the New Testment. No proof

  • I have one for you. There is no such thing as sin. Sin is a construct invented by religion.

There are consequences, but sin in and of itself does not exist.

  • This video is great. It shows we do not all have to wear suits like John macArthur every day, and shows that its okay to be 5 point calvinist reformed and listen to hardcore punk music and go into the mosh pit as well as drink beer sometimes without getting drunk. I love being a Christian and promoting the faith and fighting heresies like anyone else and I hate legalism. This video rocks and I love John MacArthur and Phil Johnson and Lane CH's blog! Thanks!

  • the purpose of cloisterng is not to make oneself holy nor to remove oneself from temptation but rather to live in a community of prayer, focussed on god. it is not possible to live focussed on god in society with others in the secular world. this man misunderstands monasticism on the most basic level

  • Nice job, Lane, with the video. And, I think you & Phil were dead on about us being able to see the sins in other people as opposed to seeing them in us. It's something I struggle with.
