you act as if the dog is in the pool by himself. the amount of time needed for the dog to actually lose consciousness and even come close to dying exceeds how long it would take the owner to save him. your being too critical. now if he just threw the dog in and hoped for best then yes i would agree with you, but he didn't. my basset enjoys swimming in my pool, and i know of a few that don't and can't. wouldn't it be best to know if it can swim now, than finding out the hard way later?
To everyone making a big to do about this there are tons of videos of Bassets swimming on here so why don't you take a look at those and grow up.

do you honestly think that the owner would let his dog drown right in front of him? he was right there next to the basset.

I agree they cant swim worth a dam!!! I wonder if I grab fat boy by the neck and drag him around the pool he would like that!!

Bassett hounds are ALOT heavier on the front than the rear and as such can drown very easily. You could have killed your dog. Cruel, very cruel.
