In my opinion Ritchie is both technically and style wise the most versatile player of his generation. He introduced classical elements to rock music, he was the master of live improvisation, he played arpeggios back in 1969 when most player didn't even know how to spell "arpeggio", whether he plays blues, funk, rock, heavier stuff or the acoustic he is simply the master of guitar.
And the non-technical part... Well, let's say that Malmsteen, in all his skill, will never reach his idol.
