More reports are surfacing about the plight of mainland Chinese farmers, who are forcefully evicted by the countrys communist regime. They say that hundreds of acres are being forcefully acquired by developers, while local authorities are splashing funds on extravagant modifications to buildings for Party officials.
After Mengzi County authorities sold their building to a developer for 76 million RMB in 2006, authorities acquired over 170 acres of farm land from farmers in Tuguan Village about five kilometers outside of town.
They used the land to build a new Party office building with an area of 34,000 square metres, and a further 17 acres of man-made gardens and an underground swimming pool.
Farmers who work in corn fields around the new building are complaining that if developers want to build new houses there, the landowners are left with little choice but to give it up.
One of them is Zhongshu Duan, who says Chinas Ministry of National Land Resources only approved farm land of 1000 acres to be developed, but still went ahead with acquiring 5,000 acres for very little compensation. According to Chinese law, compensation should be 780,000 RMB per acre, but local authorities only gave farmers up to 180,000 RMB per acre.
Some farmers only got about 10,000 RMB per acre. Zhongshu suspects corruption.
[Zhongshu Duan, Farmer]: (quote1,male):
"Local government officials and the business people have colluded to take advantage of farmers. All corrupted officials have made a high profit. There were 11 villages with farmers who lost their lands and needed to be compensated, so the developers stand to have made a profit of 200 million RMB a loss of 200 million RMB to the farmers."
A farmer forced out of work in Xinzhen Village says local authorities forcefully acquired 340 Mu to build commercial property and offered unreasonably low compensation.
[Displaced Xinzhen Village Farmer]: (quote2, male):
"We went to the province, the city and the county to petition, but ended with no result."
[Zhongshu Duan, Farmer]: (quote3, male):
"We were kicked out like soccer balls. They just pushed away the responsibility."
NTD's Chinese reporter called Mengzi Village chief Jinsong Dai, and this is what he had to say:
[Jinsong Dai, Mengzi Village Chief]: (quote4,male):
"I don't know anything about it because I left."
The villagers say that after their land was taken away from them, they had to look for work elsewhere.
They say they will continue to petition and fight to get their land back.
It's just a matter of time before the people say "enough is enough" and start a movement... that's what the Chinese Goverment fears more than anything!
