Reverend Father Edmund Michael Idranyi fell asleep in the Lord Jesus Christ on the afternoon of Wednesday August 3, 2011 surrounded by members of his Saint Anne's family at his home in Atascadero, CA.

Father Ed was born on March 11, 1928 in Brooklyn, NY. His father Michael was a member of the Byzantine Rite of the Catholic Church while his mother Mary was a Catholic of the Roman Rite. As customs dictated Father Ed received the sacraments in the church of his father -- the Byzantine Ruthenian Catholic Church. Providentially the influence of both the Byzantine and Roman Rites provided Father Ed with a wonderful exposure to the great breadth of both the Eastern and Western sides of the Catholic Church.

Growing up in Fairfield Connecticut Father Ed attended both rites of the Church and attended Catholic schools graduating from Cardinal Bellarmine Preparatory School-Fairfield College Preparatory School, a Jesuit institution in 1946. Following high school Father Ed attended the Franciscan Minor Seminary of St. Joseph Seraphic Seminary in Callicoon, New York. He progressed onward and later entered the Franciscan Novitiate in Paterson, NJ. He earned a Bachelor of Sacred Theology degree from Catholic University in Washington DC and a graduate degree from St. Bonaventure University in Olean, NY. Father Ed was ordained to the Holy Priesthood by Apostolic delegate Archbishop Ameleto Cicognani on May 5, 1954 at the Holy Land Shrine in Washington, DC.

After ordination, Father Ed served several Roman Rite Catholic parishes as a priestly Franciscan Friar. In 1963 he felt a call to the eastern half of his spirituality and began celebrating the Byzantine Divine Liturgies throughout the Pittsburgh area where he was also a featured writer for the Byzantine Catholic World newspaper. He arrived in California in 1966 and later began serving as a priest in the Eparchy of Van Nuys through the graces of his dear friend Monsignor George N. Vida and Monsignor(later Bishop) George Kuzma. Father Ed went on to serve as Secretary to Bishop Thomas Dolinay, was the editor of the eparchial newsletter and along with Bishop Dolinay appeared on EWTN as an expert of the Eastern side of the Catholic Church.

In 1986 at the invitation of Father Jim Nisbet of Old Mission San Luis Obispo and the approval of Bishop Thomas Dolinay, Father Ed founded Saint Anne Catholic Church of the Byzantine Rite in San Luis Obispo at the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary Oratory at the Old Mission. He became Saint Anne's first pastor, was instrumental in the purchase of the parish's current church building in 1991 and shepherded Saint Anne's faithful for twenty three years.

On June 30, 2009 at the age of 81 Father Ed retired as the Founding Pastor of Saint Anne's Parish. He was subsequently appointed to the role of Pastor Emeritus (the first in the Eparchy) by Bishop Gerald N. Dino, a reflection of his service to the Church, his parish and most especially to his flock. In retirement Father Ed was well served by those he had served for so many years -- most notably Walter and Jean Bronson and Timothy Stoner.

  • With the souls of the just brought to perfection, grant rest to your servant, the priest Edmund, keeping him for the blessed life with you, for you love mankind.

In your place of rest, O Lord, where all your saints repose, give rest to the soul of your servant, for you alone love mankind.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit,

You re the God who descended into Hades and loosed the bonds of those imprisoned there. Now O Saviour give rest to soul of your servant.
