Ajahn Chah is one of my favorite Buddhist teachers. He created a couple of wats (temples) in the forest tradition. I might be correct in saying he reintroduced the forest tradition of Buddhism by creating Wat Nong Pah Pong - this temple in Warin Chamrap district of Ubon Ratchathani province in northeastern Thailand.

The temple grounds are massive, and yet the atmosphere is one of simplicity. I used to roam around the paths and do walking meditation. It was here that, while 30 minutes into walking meditation, and on the verge of jhana - a butterfly landed on my nose for a few steps as I walked through a bamboo thatch.

I think Ajarn Chah also founded Wat Pah Nanachat in Warin Chamrap, another of my favorite Buddhist temples in the northeast of Thailand. Currently there are many foreign monks studying Buddhism there. At times there are over 100 monks staying at the temple. Here at Wat Nong Pah Pong, there was only one foreign monk that I met - a man from England. If you want to stay at this temple, I believe you need to know Thai already - at a high level. Wat Pah Nanachat has no such requirement, but you will attend classes to learn Thai if you ordain as a monk there.

I shot this with my old Sony Cybershot. The colors are weak, and the sound is bad. Next time we go up to this temple, I'll shoot better video.

  • Very nice. I got to spend about 10 days at the forest monastery/retreat of the late Achaan Buddhadasa (Suan Moke) back in 1989. This place was in southern Thailand near the little village of Chaiya. Several dozen foreigners there, and they hosted intensive meditation retreats. My favorite memory: Achaan Buddhadasa on a little bench in front of his living quarters, answering questions about the Dhamma with a rooster perched on his knee. The rooster knew that was a very safe place to be. :)

  • lol toke off your shoes....nice
