@burrrandy less smooth and sexy, I agree. but less dark, I certainly don't think so. Cash's voice is so naturally sombre, esp. at this stage in his life. And the accompanying music may sound too countryish to be dark for many people, but it's more stripped down and less beaty so that does help enhance the darkness in a different way. I don't think this tries to be sexy, it recreates a different feeling deliberately, like all Cash covers. But I'm a Big Springsteen fan so this isn't an argument:)

I personally prefer the Springsteen version, but this version is also fantastic. I don't think it's really fair to compare the two, though, since they have different styles.
