Hayley was one of my first childhood idols. I grew up watching her films, and I even had the LP soundtrack of her signature film, "The Parent Trap" (1961). I wasn't surprised later when I learned that she was a teen sweetheart of the early 60s generation. The London-born actress comes from a distinguished thespian family - her father, Sir John Mills was one of Britain's top actors, gracing the stage and screen, her mother, Mary Hayley Bell, was a talented playwright. Her older sister, Juliet, is an accomplished actress in her own right, while younger brother Jonathan is a producer. Hayley won her first screen role when director J. Lee Thompson decided to rewrite the role of a young boy in "Tiger Bay" (1959) as a girl as he was so impressed with her naturalness. The film was a hit and marked the first of several times that she would costar with her father onscreen. It also impressed Walt Disney, who signed her to a five-year-contract after her success (and special Oscar win) as "Pollyanna" (1960), the poor but cheerful orphan who lights up the lives everyone she meets. "The Parent Trap" , in which she played dual roles as identical twins, immediately followed and was an even bigger hit. In between her other Disney projects - "In Search Of The Castaways" (1962), "Summer Magic" (1963), "The Moon-spinners" (1964) and "That Darn Cat" (1965), she made several acclaimed films in her native England such as "Whistle Down The Wind" (1962), based on her mother's novel of the same title, "The Chalk Garden" (1964), "The Truth About Spring" (1965) and "Gypsy Girl" aka "Sky West And Crooked" (1966), directed by her father and the screenplay penned by her mother. After leaving Disney in 1965, she freelanced in such films as "The Trouble With Angels" (1966), and "The Family Way", again opposite her dad, in a film considered controversial for the day, regarding a young married couple's strained union due to impotency, small-town gossip and living with the groom's family. Her movie career lost its momentum around this time, and she was in minor British films until the mid-70s when she decided to branch out into theatre, and later, television, appearing in the teen hit series "Saved By The Bell" as well as three "Parent Trap" made-for-cable sequels. In the 1990s she toured as Anna in the musical "The King And I". The proud mother of two sons, Hayley still exudes the same charm, humor and unaffectedness that she had at twelve in her debut.

Enjoy!

  • My first, best, but unfortunately not my only, crush. Are you sure that isn't Britt Eckland at 1:41?

  • @major600, it's Hayley. Britt doesn't have the apple cheeks that Hayley does.

  • What is this beautiful song! Which CD?

    Can you answer?

  • The song is "Gypsy Soul" by Stephanie Schneiderman, but it's not my originally chosen audio. The link in the sidebar will take you to a site where you can view it with "I'm A Believer" by The Monkees as the background music.

  • Wouldn`t it be a great idea to make all school children today watch, `Whistle Down The Wind` ? but they would probably just laugh. The age of innocence is gone.

  • Charming. I love women with English accents. Can't take my ears off them.

  • Very charming. I remember when I was watching Mills' films as a kid, I thought it odd how the American characters she played had such strong English accents.

  • Is it me or does 2:39 look sorda like Hilary Duff?
