DEVELOPMENT: In 1994, director James Cameron wrote a 80-page scriptment for Avatar, reportedly in just two weeks. In August 1996, Cameron announced that after completing Titanic, he would film Avatar, which would make use of synthetic, or computer-generated, actors. Visual effects house Digital Domain, with whom Cameron has a partnership, joined the project, which was supposed to begin production in the summer of 1997 for a 1999 release. However, Cameron felt that the technology had not caught up with the story and vision that he intended to tell. He decided to concentrate on making documentaries and refining the technology for the next few years. 20th Century Fox had fronted $10 million to Cameron to film a proof-of-concept clip for Avatar, which he showed to Fox execs in October 2005. In February 2006, Cameron said he had switched goals for the two film projects Project 880 was now scheduled for 2007 and Battle Angel for 2009. He indicated that the release of Project 880 would possibly be delayed until 2008. Later that February, Cameron revealed that Project 880 was "a retooled version of Avatar", a film that he had tried to make years earlier, citing the technological advances in the creation of the computer-generated characters Gollum, King Kong and Davy Jones.
PLOT: A paraplegic ex-marine finds a new life on the distant planet of Pandora, only to find himself battling humankind alongside the planet's indigenous Na'vi race in this ambitious digital 3D sci-fi epic from Academy Award-winning Titanic director James Cameron.
STORY: Contrary to media sources, the delayed "2009" film was actually released in January 2010 to start the new decade with a bang, which marks Cameron's first dramatic feature since 1997's Titanic, follows Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), a war veteran who gets called to the depths of space to pick up the job of his slain twin brother for the scientific arm of a mega corporation looking to mine the planet of Pandora for a valued ore. Unfortunately, the biggest deposit of the prized substance lies underneath the home of the Na'vi, a ten-foot-tall, blue-skinned native tribe who have been at war with the security arm of the company, lead by Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang). Because of the planet's hostile atmosphere, humans have genetically grown half-alien/half-human bodies which they can jack their consciousnesses into and explore the world in. Since Jake's brother already had an incredibly expensive Avatar grown for him, he's able to connect with it using the same DNA code and experience first-hand the joys of Pandora while giving the scientific team, led by Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) and Norm Spellman (Joel David Moore), some well-needed protection against the planet's more hostile forces. On a chance meeting after getting separated from his team, Jake's Avatar is rescued by Neytiri (Zoe Saldana), a Na'vi princess. Yet as Jake becomes one with the tribe and begins to understand the secrets of Pandora, his conscience is torn between his new adopted world and the wheelchair-bound one awaiting him when the psychic connection to his Avatar is broken. Soon battle lines are drawn and Jake needs to decide which side he will fight on when the time comes. Cameron acknowledges that Avatar implicitly criticizes America's role in the War in Iraq and the impersonal nature of mechanized warfare in general.
KEY FACTS: Avatar became the all-time highest grossing film in foreign box office revenue; two days later it surpassed Titanic's worldwide gross to become the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide and on January 31, it became the first film to earn over $2 billion. It took $31,280,029 in the U.S. and Canada to set a seventh weekend record, and remained in the number one spot at the domestic box office for seven consecutive weeks, the most consecutive #1 weekends since Titanic spent 15 weekends at #1 in 1997-'98. On February 2, 2010, Avatar became only the second film to gross over $600 million in North America and overtook Titanic as the highest-grossing film of all time in its domestic market and at least 25 other countries. The film is also the first to gross over $100 million worldwide in specialized IMAX viewings.
Peter Jackson's Oscar-winning Weta Digital visual-effects house supervises Avatar's complex special effects. In 2006, Cameron stated that if Avatar were successful, he hoped to make two sequels to the film. The first sequel would take place after the events of the first film, and would continue to follow the characters of Jake and Neytiri. Sam Worthington has signed on to reprise his role as Jake Sully in future sequels, and Stephen Lang, who played Colonel Miles Quaritch, believes his character could make a return.
