Dutch was may coach at Fresno State. He held the worlds record from 1940 to 1956 I believe. He was first to jump over 15' and if he had a pole like they use today he would still hold the worlds record. He was a real gentleman.

I was coached by the "flying Duchman" when he was the track coach at Fresno State. He was one of the greatest pole vaulters of all time. Used a bamboo pole and vaulted 15' 7 3/4"-60yrs ago. If he had one of the new poles like the ones they use today he would still hold the world's record. I remember he had the pole hanging in the Freson State locker room (he would still jump often when he was coaching. He was in great shape. In those days we landed in sawdust. Dutch was a real gentleman.

His personal best was 4.77 (wr with a bamboo pole). So I think that was somwhere under 5 metres. :)
