The suspect in a botched convenience store robbery last week is now out of the hospital and charged with a crime.
Joseph Ryan Anderson, 30, was charged Sunday afternoon with armed robbery and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Mark Headstrong, the store's clerk, said Anderson came into the Wrightsville Country Store off Wrightsville Avenue Thursday afternoon, pointed a gun and demanded money.
Headstrong said he pulled out a handgun the owner, Musa Agil, had given him and tried to shoot the floor, but hit Anderson, the alleged robber, in the leg instead.
Anderson then tried to come around the counter so the clerk fired the gun again and shot the man in the hand.
Headstrong said Anderson asked him not to call 911, but his girlfriend instead. Headstrong didn't listen and called 911.
According to Headstrong, this is the third time he has been robbed at the Country Store.
Anderson was taken out of the store on a stretcher and taken to the hospital for treatment.
This robbery comes three weeks after a similar incident. In late October a store owner on Dawson Street shot a man who was trying to rob his convenience store.
The clerk had a young child with him behind the counter. A teen robber took money from the register and then demanded an iPod from the child. The clerk shot the thief when he turned to leave the store.
"We don't want the wild, wild west out there but on the other hand you have every right in the world to protect yourself, and I've always been an advocate of protecting yourself and your families," said Police Chief Ralph Evangelous.
