Johann Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750):
PETRUS DER NICHT DENKT ZURÜCK

This is chorale no. 4 from the St. John Passion,
and the final chorale of part one (before the sermon).

Petrus, der nicht denkt zurück,
Seinen Gott verneinet,
Der doch auf ein' ernsten Blick
Bitterlichen weinet.
Jesu, blicke mich auch an,
Wenn ich nicht will büßen;
Wenn ich Böses hab getan,
Rühre mein Gewissen!

Peter, when he fails to think,
Hath his God deniéd.
Yet when first the truth is seen,
Bitterly he weepeth.
Jesus, look on me as well,
When I feel no sorrow;
When I wickedness have done,
Stir thou up my conscience!

(Paul Stockmann, 1633)

  • @Bomenpulp However...how 'bout all those lovely notes in measures 13 and 14 ?

    Thank goodness I'm wearing my sheepskin slippers as my toes are currently curling up in ecstacy

    from the afterglow of Bach's genius.

  • @gerardbedecarter indeed it is! The last four notes of the tenor voice are pure genius!
