News International chairman James Murdoch said.

In the past few days, claims have been made that the paper authorised hacking into the mobile phones of murdered schoolgirl Milly Dowler and the families of 7/7 bombing victims.

It has also been reported that phones belonging to the families of fallen service personnel were also a target, and that police officers were paid for information.

Mr Murdoch described the allgations as "shocking" but also spoke up in support of Rebekah Brooks, a former NoW editor who is now chief executive at News International.

In this video News International chairman James Murdoch explains why the News of the World is being closed down.

Murdoch says:

"These phone hacking allegations are shocking and hugely regrettable."

"I am satisfied Rebekah Brooks' leadership of this business and her standard of ethics and standard of conduct are very good."
