Founder of the Transition Network spreading throughout the world, Rob Hopkins talks about Transition Town Totnes and moving towards a post-peak oil society. His book The Transition Handbook gives an account of the founding of Transition Town Totnes, and the global spread of Transition towns. He shows you how to start the Transition process in your community, and why it is important that communities are resilient to the coming decline of oil as an energy source. He also includes the facts about peak oil, and puts a persuasive argument for acting now, rather than later. See www.greenbooks.co.uk for 'The Transition Handbook: from Oil Dependency to Local Resilience'.

The U.S. will have the toughest time creating transition towns because everything is structured to function on cheap oil.....

@Eriyah -I'm not sure a lot of people involved in Transition would agree that vegan is critical! Personally I think it depends largely on where you live and what's available. I live in Scotland. Working on the basis that local is better, it'd be nigh impossible for me to live on a local, vegan diet. That's just not what the landscape is good at producing. So I'd rather eat a little local meat, fish, honey, eggs, milk and cheese etc. than depend on tofu, lentils and beans flown in from elsewhere.

Nice work, I applaud you. Just don't forget what global bankers think of your independence and your new local currency. The outstanding interest they feel entitled to will carry heavy penalties and an example will be made of you. Consider yourself lucky if they warn you first. All the mayhem (death squads) we sat around and let happen all over the world is about to come home to us. Massive, independent, political action (revolution) is the way to deal with the root of our problem.

Reading the book at the moment. In the first chapters you sometimes repeat things too often but all in all it is a great work. Can't wait to read on!
