Artist Dee Williams created this historical painting of the most famous of the ghost stories of St. Simons Island, Georgia, the Legend of Ebo Landing. During the Plantation Era of St. Simons Island, a miserable cargo of Africans arrived by ship to work the plantations. As the story goes, as they were held awaiting their fate aboard ship on Dunbar Creek, on the leeward side of St. Simons Island, one of their almost 100 number happened to be their African chief. When he made the decision to drown rather than enter a lifetime of slavery, the group headed not to shore, but to the sea all chained together where most drowned. To this day, stories abound about the ghosts of these unfortunate souls, and African American fishermen refuse to drop a hook in the creek.
This painting depicts the group in their final moments before the sea took them home.
