Mikado 4960 is one of the most famous steam engines still in active service. Or rather, was. On June 20th, 2008, 4960 in service with the Grand Canyon Railway took one final trip to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. It was then mothballed at the GCRs Williams Depot. Shortly thereafter all steam service to the South Rim was canceled. Alco diesels now provide the motive power for GCR trains. A sad day for steam fans.

  • Actually, she made 1 more trip after this one. The last fire was lit in her on the 21st. If i remember correctly. I sure do miss the GCR. Really miss 29 as well as 4960. Got to fire both of them and would not trade that for anything in the world.

  • Thanks for the correction. You're quite lucky to have had those experiences, I'll agree with that for sure.

  • actually they might get used on special trips and they might sell #4960 california and western wants it

  • That'd be good if it could still stay in active service, even if it wasn't where I could see it easily.

  • Actually, they brought 4960 back. :)

  • @Strasburg1991 People still try hard to keep them running. And people also make new miniature live steam engines. So, it's going pretty well. :)

  • so what are the plans with steam today

  • IRM GET CB&Q #4963 HER SISTER #4960, 4960 DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE IN STORAGE!

  • R.I.P

    Mikado 4960

She was a good engine just like the surviving ones.

  • @wippydobo321 you mean California Western railroad? they alrady have an operational steam engine.

  • I think the Abilene and Smokey Valley Railway, in Kansas, should buy her. They have a running steamer. ATSF 3415.

  • Fortunately, 4960 has returned to service, but only on a limited basis... she's been converted to burn Waste Vegetable Oil and will pull a special excursion to the South Rim on Saturday, Sept. 19th to commemorate the railroad's 20th anniversary of tourist service...

  • Awesome. It makes it sound like it will only be used for special events, but that's still better than nothing.
