idk if u already tried this but one of the reasons the tank could be cloudy and stuff floating around ....the tube that transports the water to the filtering box will sometimes get the plants roots stuck in it and the filter will not work as good as needed

sup david, you should get rid of it. the carbon might start competing with the plants. if that happens the plants will become starved of nutrients and might start helping the algae out.
