We don't necessarily need new technology. The technology to maintain our societies in an environmentally friendly way is already existing. Furthermore, the problem is not a technogolical problem but rather a problem of the 'Western' way of lifestyle: that means, having a car, airplane transport, shipping of products from overseas, having a high consumption of meat, etc.
However, economic growth is exactly promoting this kind of lifestyle...

population decline in a industrial country = economical collapse
and to fight global worming we need to develop new technology and this is very expensive, ONLY WITH A GROWING ECONOMY a country will spend more money in research. and a GROWING ECONOMY is associate with stable population GROWTH (1% to 1.5%) and NOT with A STABLE OR DECLINING POPULATION
