Lon Chaney is in some way a song where I identify with the protagonist in his darkest hour. Somehow I feel what I think he feels.

Thanks for the video DW!

"LON CHANEY":
Oh Lon Chaney,
where you been so long?
Sit right down
and let me sing you a song.
I seen you on a movie in my room.

Oh Lon Chaney,
with the velvet touch,
a silver dagger and a black man's crutch.
Now's the time to come out from your tomb.
You look so sad,
with a face of stone,
with a hunchback's eye you live.

Oh Lon Chaney,
with the velvet touch,
a gypsy woman that you love so much.
Say goodbye,
you're cured,
you're free at last.

Oh Lon Chaney,
what's to hold you back?
The Wolfman's dead
and the old black cat is gone,
like a memory faded from your past.
You look so sad,
with a face of stone,
just skin and bone.
You're all alone,
with a hunchback's eye you live.

  • What a great tribute!! Lon Chaney Shall Not Die!!

  • thank you for this excellent video and song. I had never heard it previously, and it captures Lon Chaney perfectly.

  • WOW, someone else knows about this song (the B-side of Wild In The Steets, from 1973). At that time, I couldn't believe Garland knew about Chaney. So, now, after all those years, a combinatin of the two. Thanks :)

  • that was beautiful and to tell you the truth you look alot like my brother at a young age.

  • I am Lon Chaney's neece Thank You! Wonderful! My mother was from Morocco! Love it. My father would hold my hands and the last time I saw him he gasped becuase know I know I was Lon's. My grandmother was Opal and she was his step sister. We have all had hearing problems but listening to this brings me home. I have his hands. awesome. My uncle became the head of Cancer research at Notra Damn.

  • Thank you for this Mr Jeffreys - As a school kid in Morocco I remember when "Matador" was playing all the time on the radio and we all loved it, we didn't catch all the lyrics back then but could feel the spiritual deepness of it and many others from your inspired writing

  • Great Video for this so intimate, i'd say, blues. The over-the-top acting is in happy marriage with your understated ballad. Very moving.

Glad it is not overproduced, overarranged, that happens so fast sometimes with a rather simple and catchy tune. 5/5

  • Awesome! My fave character of Lon's-he put so much emotion into Quasimodo!
