If you leave the female with the male too long, the male WILL KILL THE FEMALE.

What I did wrong, I have used a too small tank, you need at least a 10 gallon, I wanted them to "breed" in there, remove the female, then remove the male after two days. I have written up the proper procedure below also with links to other videos which in my opinion describe the process clearly and properly.

So the male Betta creates a bubble nest, he does so by swallowing air and "swishing" it in his mouth so his saliva creates the bubbles.

For the female Betta, they are usually ready when you see "eggs" on her underside. Which appear like a tiny white patch.

Then you can place them next to each other so they can see each other and when ready you put the female in the males tank.

What's important is to keep a constant eye on both fish and when you see signs of aggression (they WILL be aggressive, but when you see one of them getting injured) separate them. When the female destroys the bubble nest and is uncooperative, remove her, try again in a few days. Don't push it or you will end up without a female.

Make sure the breeding (spawning) tank is of the right size (at least 10 gallon) with a sponge filter set on VERY low;

Reason number one, the male Betta's fins might get stuck and also the current is too much and their fins are heavy.

Reason number two, The bubble nest is where the eggs will be located and you do not want the current to disrupt it or suck the eggs and newly hatched fry in.

You must remove the female ASAP and leave the male with the eggs. Then remove the male after 48 hours.

Make sure to remove all the dead eggs and when the fry grow, you will be able to tell male from females, usually fairly early on, you can then start separating them.

You need a decent tank, a hide and floating plants, a male and female Betta (duh), a sponge filter and brine shrimp.

So again;

1-Prepare your tank; cycle it properly, get proper hiding spots and floating plants, install slow moving sponge filter, then:

2-Introduce the male in the 10 gallon tank for a few days, when he starts creating a bubble nest;

3-Make the male and female visible to each other without contact;

4-When they are aware of each other, put the female in the males tank;

5-Watch closely, aggression will be present, just make sure it's not too brutal;

6-After spawning/breeding, remove the female ASAP or the male WILL KILL HER;

7-Leave the male in the tank for 2 to 4 days and make sure to feed well but not excessively;

8-Remove dead eggs;

9-When the fry hatch remove the male or he will eat them, feed the fry with brine shrimp;

10-After a few days you will see which are males and which are females, after you notice the fry's sexes, start separating them.

11-TAADDAA!

Song is "Ring of Fire" by Johnny Cash.

  • That looks like my female

  • Hi, I was wondering how to differentiate between alive eggs and dead eggs? Is there anyway to see whether the bubbles have eggs already if you miss the egg part?
