Le Jeune Homme et la Mort, a sensational dance-drama, was famously performed by Mikhail Baryshnikov in the opening sequence of the movie White Nights (1985) and encapsulates the existential world of post-war Paris. This sensational dance-drama, invented by Jean Cocteau for Roland Petit, sees a faithless woman tormenting her young lover in his cluttered Parisian garret, driving him to desperation and despair.
This performance by English National Ballet was part of a season dedicated to Roland Petit who will be remembered throughout the world as one of the finest choreographers of the 20th century. It features a guest performance from Ivan Vasiliev as the Young Man with Jia Zhang as the girl he adores.
