Part two of Boing Boing Video's conversation with game researcher Jane McGonigal of Institute for the Future, on emotion and ethics in game design. What responsibilities do the creators of virtual worlds have? Can games change the world, or make us better people?

We conducted this interview during the recent Game Developer Conference in San Francisco (http://www.gdconf.com/), and ran on a marathon streaming video webcast (http://ustream.tv/channel/boing-boing-l ive).

  • Gamers are not criminals ... Gaming is not a crime.

  • Game movement when said fast like Jane did, sounds like Gay movement... :P

  • We need to E-farm. Its not that crazy an idea.

  • Anon-this way of being a dick, is going to be called "Using iPad Contact!" But since this "woman", Xeni ( short for Xenis) is more comfortable wearing her hair like a man, why should she respond to another woman by using polite and attentive reactions? Jane is probably kicking her under the table to get her to look at her!

  • Fascinating how it's not considered impolite anymore to stare at your computer screen while someone talks to you, even DURING AN INTERVIEW.

  • after watching a lot of BoingBoing videos, I'm pretty convinced that Xeni Jardin is a lesbian

  • What artist that song at the end by?

  • What an idea! how do you do that? change personality I mean?

The more I think about it the more it wrecks my head. what does that statement mean?

Is personality as frivolous as something you can discard/try on? If it is, is it very real/very fake? is it really you? it could easily be you or not you right?

  • 4:23

In relation to virtual worlds - "if you want to... try on personalities that you're not sure you're ready to embody for real, then (its) super great for that."

  • Since most people don't understand how money is created, surely the designers of that game were unethical.
