Depth jumps use the muscles ability to manipulate the stretch recpetors in the tendons to create extra force within the muscle. The pre-stretch is created by landing on the ground. The added force created by the stretch-reflex is summated onto the force already created by the muscle. This type of traininng leads to increases in power, especially in the glutes and quads in this case. However, only well-trained and experienced athletes should perform these exercises due to the chance of tendon injury. An athlete should also limit the number of jumps performed each week due to the stress placed on joint over repeated attempts.
