4 hours a day was after he already reached the level. He said he worked really hard when he was a kid. God knows what that meant. It would certainly help if you had your parents watching you practice til you were 20, especially one being a violinist himself.

Is this from a film? They keep panning to individual actors reacting to the music and running out. Not what they normally do in filmed performances. :-)

"Nothing he is doing is easy"

    LOL. Understatement of the century.

It's the Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto! One of the pinnacles of a violinist's career.

He practiced scales/arpeggios/studies every day regardless of what else he had to do, even if he didn't practice anything else that day. Apparently he said it was like having breakfast.

He felt they were fundamental for any good violinist. He would ask pupils to play random scales completely out of the blue. And not the easy ones either. e.g. Gb minor in 10ths, 2 octaves. Aaaargh!

That's not true, he practice like 3 or 4 hours a day, and he didn't touch his violin on Sundays. He felt practice needs to be important, not just mindless labor. It's honestly the best advice I've ever read up on. That said, practice is still REALLY important. It's not about length of time, its the focus while it's happening.

Heifetz HAS to rank as the number one violinist since the beginning of recorded music!

In spite of the less than perfect recording techniques of his day, Heifetz's talent is there for all to hear!...BEAUTIFUL!

I'd be surprised to learn that Heifetz practiced 8 hours a day...I believe that Segovia said "people who practice 5 or more hours a day are Donkeys!" Nathan Milstein was also scornful about people who practiced for 'many hours a day (instead of always seeking a better way to play any piece)
