I work at a Ford Dealership in Austin. Last week I got to see and hear the new 2011 Diesel. There is a huge difference in sound volume between the 2010 6.4L and the new motor. New truck sounds as quiet as a gas truck.

Is it still not the "new diesel sound" though? I own a 2003 7.3 w/ stacks, stage 1 injectors, daily driver, blah, blah, etc... But loud = 'dirty' to some, I can't get loud enough! Diesel is the future of the US/World and if that means making the new ones quieter... So be it! Drive an older, louder Ford! :-D

the 6.7 and 6.4 and extremely different.

this is a faulty comparison....he's trying to brag up the new 6.7 liter engine,,,but he's comparing it to an old engine before 2008 with the tier 3 regulations. compare that 6.7 liter with the current 6.4 liter, and there probably isn't even a difference.

DAMN RIGHT!!!! I'm staying with my old 6.9 and 7.3 IDI non-turbos!!!!
Nothing sounds better than an old IDI in the mornin' :D
Cummins are awesome to!!!!!

Here, here. I like the quiet diesel. Nothing is more annoying than some guy in his, say, 1998 Dodge Diesel pulling up beside you and bah, bah, bah, bah, bah. It's freggin louder than 3 Mack trucks put together. Quiet diesel = good news.

the 'new diesel sound' sucks!!! my gasser idles louder than that thing!

Will it change anything in the performance of the engine?

wonder if fords engine will be a complete fail
Can you explain what was done to this diesel to make it so much quieter?

Unique inboard exhaust and outboard intake architecture, an automotive-industry first for a modern production diesel engine, reduces overall exhaust system volume, which leads to better throttle response for the customer; additionally, reduced exhaust system surface area minimizes heat transfer to the engine compartment and improves NVH (noise, vibration, harshness)
